[CHAT]: Eating Healthy

We all know we should be eating healthy, but it can be hard especially when uni/school/life gets stressful and instead of picking healthy options we go for that ice cream (or chocolate or cake or whatever else you crave) that is calling our name in the freezer instead.

It can also feel like the easy option to go for unhealthy food over healthy food when we're out and about.

giphy

But eating healthy doesn't have to be hard and healthy options can save us money, time and provide us the energy we need to be the best. Eating healthy doesn't need to be a chore either with loads of healthy options tasting great and can even be substituted for unhealthy cravings.

giphy

But how do we go about eating healthy (or at least healthier)? What about eating healthy on a budget or when you're just too tired to cook? These are just some of the questions we will be exploring at 7.30pm AEDT on Monday the 26th.

Hope to see you all there!

Hello Everyone,

I finally remembered on time it is GR time! 😄

@lokifish of course you'd say that! Love that you added the cookie monster GIF!

Eating Healthy to me means eating a balanced diet of all the items from the food triangle...

Although as @basketofmonkeys said I can't say I'm good at always sticking to it...

What does eating healthy mean to you?

It it means putting good food in my body, drinking water and staying away from oils, butters and processed foods not completely but most of the time.  I was just studying this today :).  There’s also the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating which I can’t put up cause I’m  on my phone.

Ok, so we've started chatting about different types of foods. Following on from this is our next question:

What are your favourite healthy snacks/meals?

What are your favourite healthy snacks/meals?

When I'm at work or uni and need snacks, I'll often cut up some carrot sticks and bring those. I'm also a big fan of roasted almonds and/or muesli bars and will have those too. As for meals, I'll tend to toss some rice and various vegetables into a pan with soy or satay sauce for flavour...

How can we get our 2 fruit and 5 veg into our daily diet?

I've grown up being told that when it comes to dinner you need to add at least 3 vegies if not more 🙂 so for tonight I made a chicken and vegetable soup and it had zucchini, carrot, tinned tomatoes, corn, mushrooms, onion, garlic.

@scared01From the top of my head it was:

fry an onion and 2 cloves of chopped garlic in a big pan, then add 3 finely chopped carrots, a chopped zucchini and as many mushrooms (also chopped) as you want. Saute for 5 minutes to caramelise the vegies, add 2 tins crushed tomatoes and some Italian herbs stir for a couple of minutes. Fill the empty tomato tins with water and add that in, pour in 1 litre of water and a couple of teaspoons of powdered vegie stock. Add in 8 chicken thigh fillets bring to a boil and simmer on medium (about 30 minutes) until the chicken is cooked through, take out the chicken and shred adding it back to the saucepan with more water if needed. Add in 1/2 cup of frozen corn and bring back up to the boil until cooked you can also add in pasta when you add in the corn.

Serve with grated cheese on top and bread 🙂

We know motivation can often be a really big issue, so...

What are some tips and tricks/strategies you use to keep yourself eating well?

ErinsAnticsPosted 26-02-2018 08:28 PM

I always keep a couple of (reusable) water bottles in the fridge and grab one of those when I head out the door so I'm less likely to buy a drink. If I do buy a drink I pick a flavoured mineral water or diet sprite but I rarely do.

I don't count calories but I do try and keep track of what I eat throughout the day and go if I have that sweet thing now I can't eat anything else sweet for the rest of the day. Of course it doesn't always work but it does make me aware of what I eat.

What are some tips and tricks/strategies you use to keep yourself eating well?

In my experience the trick is to create habits - once you're used to doing something it becomes 100 times easier. Not going grocery shopping while you're hungry, and sticking to the outskirts of the supermarket (don't go up and down the aisles unless you need a specific thing - most of the junk food is kept in there). Also setting aside enough time in the morning or the evening before to prepare snacks/lunch for the coming day

I feel like excercise is such a good motivator for eating healthy, because if you go for a run I feel like you don't want to undo all that hard work with eating before food that is bad for you. I always eat better when I'm training!

If I decide to buy lunch or dinner out I tend to stick to healthier options like sushi or Chinese or if I want a burger I will go to gourmet burger place like Grilled. I think its a matter of looking at your options and finding one that is yummy but still healthy.

How can we eat healthy when we are out and about?

Keeping small healthy snacks in your bag, staying hydrated throughout the day, choosing healthier options/smaller portion sizes when you do eat out, asking friends for support (there's nothing worse than ordering a salad and then the other person orders a large serving of chips, which you can see and smell but can't taste hahaha)
